Amusement parks and arcades

Before taking children to any amusement park or arcade, make sure you:

  • Measure up and weigh in. Safety regulations on rides at amusement parks and arcades are usually dependent on the size and weight of a child. Make sure you know this information, never guess.
  • Tell children what's expected of them. Let them know that good behaviour is required at all times. Bad behaviour and risk-taking could lead to accidents at amusement parks and arcades.
  • Agree a meeting point. On arrival at amusement parks or arcades, always agree a place to meet in case you and your children become separated.
  • Dress your child distinctively. Brightly-coloured clothing means children are easier to keep an eye on at a busy amusement park or arcade.

Follow the rules
Always read and follow the recommendations and rules, as stated on signs around an amusement park or arcade. Bear in mind that safety recommendations will probably vary from ride to ride, and between different amusement parks and arcades.

Know your child
Rules and regulations are there for everyone but you know your child best. If your child fits the required height and size for a ride at an amusement park or arcade, but you know they won't follow further safety recommendations once the ride begins or are likely to get scared during it, don't let the child go on the ride.

Use your eyes
As well as keeping your eyes peeled for safety signs at amusement parks and arcades, use them to judge whether you think a ride looks safe for your child. Always watch a ride go round once first in case either you (or your child) decide it's unsuitable.

Stay in control
Never expect older children to supervise younger children in an amusement park or arcade. In particular, make sure that all children wait for announcements before getting on or off a ride.

Lead by example
You should always accompany your child to an amusement park or arcade and, where possible, join them on any rides.

If an amusement park or arcade ride stipulates certain rules or the use of certain safety equipment, don't assume it's just for child safety—show them by example how to stay safe.

Safety in small numbers
Always take enough adults to supervise the number of children you are with at an amusement park or arcade.
