Car and vehicle dismantlers
Where can I find car salvage?
- Breaker's yards, or car breakers, are where cars, bikes and vans end up when they're crash-damaged beyond repair or have reached the end of their roadlife.
- There are thousands of breaker's yards across the UK, and all makes and models of vehicles end up as car salvage, from insurance write-offs to decommissioned company cars and vehicles wrecked in accidents.
- With car salvage, vehicles are usually broken up so you can buy car parts, often reconditioned, at rock-bottom prices. Often you can buy an entire vehicle for a fraction of its original cost.
- At many car salvage yards you'll be able to walk in and buy a car part right off the shelf, or if it's not available right then, pay a deposit until a suitable vehicle comes in.
- Many car salvage specialists are now online. There are also web-based car parts finding services which link direct to a nationwide network of car salvage yards.
- You can find car parts at
daily car salvage auctions
nationwide, many of which feature imported car salvage vehicles from the USA and Asia. - Live online auctions, where you can view and bid for car salvage, attract thousands of visitors every day.
- It's always important to inspect a vehicle or car part thoroughly before you buy it. If you intend to buy a car salvage vehicle online, always try to get to see it close-up for finalising the deal.
- There are a number of different categories of car salvage, providing guidance for potential buyers.
- As a rule of thumb, Category A and Category B car salvage vehicles are only to be used for parts.
- Category C and Category D salvage means the vehicle is repairable and you may even make a profit on it.
- Category X means the car salvage has little or no damage, and you may have a bargain on your hands.
- If the car salvage is Category C or above you may need to carry out a Vehicle Identity Check (VIC) to ensure that the vehicle is not stolen. Read Directgov's guide to Vehicle Identity Checks on direct.gov
- Car salvage yards in your area will come and remove your car when it reaches the end of its life for a small fee or even for free.
- Hand over your registration document and you'll be given a Certificate of Destruction (CoD) to confirm the car was taken to a breaker's yard.
