Swimming pool contractors: a buyer's guide

If you're thinking of splashing out on a swimming pool, asking some key questions will help you find the right swimming pool contractor to get the job done.

What types of pools are there to choose from?
The main choice is between above ground and submerged pools. An above ground pool tends to be cheaper because the swimming pool contractor doesn't have to dig a hole and fit it, but a submerged pool is more traditional and easier to get in and out of.

Are there different types of construction?
If you have a submerged pool then a swimming pool contractor is likely to offer three main types of construction: a reinforced concrete shell finished with tiles or special paint; a block-work or prefabricated panel shell with a PVC liner; or a fibreglass or ceramic one-piece shell.

These all need different amounts of maintenance, which will affect the overall price the swimming pool contractor will charge.

What else do I have to consider?

You need to think about:

  • the type of pool cover you want
  • heaters
  • filters
  • the shape and size of the pool
  • plus any extras such as a diving board, patio area or pool house

The decisions you make will affect how much the swimming pool contractor charges and the amount of time it takes the swimming pool contractor to do the job.

How much will a swimming pool contractor charge?
The price will depend on the size of the job, and your choice of materials, finishes and so on. At current prices you can pay anything from ?1,500 to ?40,000.

It's a good idea to get three estimates from different swimming pool contractors with a breakdown of all the costs.

Will I need planning permission?
Generally speaking, you don't need planning permission for an outside pool unless you live in a conservation area or have a listed building. Indoor pools, however, require Building Regulations Consent.

There are exceptions to these general rules, however, so it's best to check with your swimming pool contractor and your local council planning department.

Can a swimming pool contractor help with the design and plans for my pool?
A swimming pool contractor can come and check out the site, and talk through the pros and cons of various options, and the costs involved, including maintenance of the pool afterwards.

How do I know a swimming pool contractor is reputable?
As with any tradesperson, the best way to find a good swimming pool contractor is by personal recommendation. Ask a neighbour, or someone you trust who has had a swimming pool built, if they can recommend the swimming pool contractor they used.

Swimming pool contractors who are members of SPATA (the Swimming Pool and Associated Trades Association) have to meet strict criteria about the standards of their work, their trading ethics and their financial stability. Ask, too, for references and testimonials.
